When I'm Sixty Four

Hey there, Steve here. Remember that big contract that got cancelled? Well, necessity is the mother of invention, right? Forget just trying new things – I’m gonna build an entire YouTube channel!

The Challenge:

I’m aiming for 1,000 subscribers in eight months. Ambitious? Maybe. Impossible? We’ll see! But here’s the twist: I’m starting with ZERO knowledge and a budget of $500.

I’ll take you with me every step of the way! Choosing gear, filming, editing…the whole shebang! We’ll figure this out together. Maybe make some hilarious mistakes along the way…

The Challenge in Detail

Build a Youtube channel for the first time and capture a 1,000 subscribers.

Timeframe: 8 months (end Oct 2024)

What is my skill level: Beginner, while I have made websites and have a lot of experience in marketing and software I have never set up a Youtube channel, written a script, shot a proper video or edited my own video.  I don’t have a big social media following (haven’t touched Facebook for years, don’t have a twitter account or a Pinterest account) so we are starting from no followers at all.

Budget: $500 for equipment and anything else I need.

N.B. I already have a Google Pixel 7 Pro which I will use as my main video camera. This is not included in the budget as most people have a suitable phone they can use.

Restrictions: No purchasing of views or followers, only operate as per Youtube and other guidelines and laws allow, try to use free software & services wherever possible.   

Rewards for Success: If I reach 1,000 subscribers Youtube will allow me to turn on advertising which will enable me to start earning some money from the channel.

Penalty for failure: Why don’t you the reader, make me some suggestions and I will choose one punishment from the comments. Nothing illegal, immoral, or to extremely dangerous will be considered.

Donation for failure: $25 donated to charity.

Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG):  Get to 10,000 subscriber within 12 months

So, will I make it? Will I end up with a viral channel…or a viral fail video? Only one way to find out……. When I’m Sixty Four.
